Deep Space Communications Network Sends Perfection into Outer Space for Romanian-gymnastics.com
July 18, 2006. In an effort to celebrate one of the great achievements in Olympic history, the Web site Romanian-gymnastics.com sent a tribute today into outer space utilizing the Deep Space Communications Network (DSCN). The tribute video, simply entitled "Perfect Ten", celebrates Nadia Comaneci's achievement and contribution to the sport of gymnastics and celebrates the 30th Anniversary of her perfect ten--the first perfect ten in Olympic history--at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Victor Dumitrescu, editor of www.romanian-gymnastics.com, stated, "We were looking for a unique way to celebrate one of the unique and truly perfect achievements in human sport. With DSCN's help, we pointed to space and let if fly. We have honored Nadia's achievement for all of time and space, symbolically and literally."
July 18 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Comaneci's historic performance at the Games. Comaneci, at the time just fourteen years old, won three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal for her homeland, Romania. She returned to the Olympics in 1980 to win four more medals: two gold and two silver. Perhaps most importantly, Comaneci brought recognition and acclaim to Romanian gymnastics, a program now considered by many to be the best in the world.
DSCN, set up by Communications Concepts Inc. of Cape Canaveral, Fla, has sent thousands of messages into deep space using a C-band transmitter and high gain dish antenna. Its largest transmission, sent in 2005 from Craigslist.org, consisted of more than 100,000 separate postings from the site, along with an audio recording identifying the messages as originating from Earth.
According to CCI Vice President and DSCN General Manager Jim Lewis, "When we set up Deep Space Communications, we hoped to send examples of the best and the brightest into outer space. Nadia's accomplishment obviously fits that bill."
"We can only continue to send messages and hope someone or something sees them and understands we have something valuable to offer the universe," concluded Lewis. "The way we see it, if there is someone out there receiving radio waves from this planet, Earth is getting some pretty bad press. Basically, they'd be seeing what we're seeing on the evening news: war, famine, strife and struggle. Perhaps now they will see there is also unmatched beauty and grace on our little green ball as well."
Though the transmissions continue to build up, Lewis has not yet received a response.
